How to Sew - 1st Steps to Sewing Success
by Xandra Veal
If you want to learn how to sew there are thousands, perhaps millions, of places to find information. Trouble is, with the internet in particular, not all of it has any value to you. If you type "how to sew" into Google you get (as of today) 1,770,000 pages! How on earth do you sort out the good sites from all those?
I honestly can't answer that question. Even in the top 20 there are inappropriate results. I can however offer an alternative - just as accessible but more immediately useful - and that's ebooks. Sewing ebooks can be downloaded straight to your computer so access is virtually as fast as any sewing website - and because you can see the title of the ebook, and a description of the contents, you're not wasting time with information you don't want.
There are many ebooks on how to sew available, and there are lots of places to get downloadable sewing catalogs and sewing patterns. Although the method of delivery is relatively new, it doesn't try to replace old-fashioned skills with new ideas, it's just an easier way for you to access the learning.
I'm going to go into a bit of detail on a very useful series I've just come across from highly respected sewing teacher, lecturer and author, Marian Lewis. Sewing as a profession has been Marian's life, so if you want to learn how to sew a particular item, or learn a particular sewing technique, who better to learn from?
At present there are five sewing ebooks in the series: Sewing Project Tips Volume 1 (with over 60 sewing techniques, tips and projects), Common Sense Fitting Methods (how to fit skirts and pants quickly and perfectly), Couture Sewing Course - a classy straight skirt (learn the secrets of top fashion designers), Sew a Teepee (this one could save you hundreds of dollars!) and finally for the moment, Sewing a Tote Bag (a basic sewing course).
Each of Marion's ebooks are much more than just how to sew a particular thing. They're packed with really useful sewing lessons that will improve your sewing whatever level you're at and can be applied to so much more than just the item being sewn. They've certainly taught me a trick or two and I've been sewing, if only as a normal at-home seamstress, for over thirty years. In addition, of course, they can save you a good deal of money. There are kids teepees available to buy online that are in the region of $300 yet with one of these pattern books you could produce something just as good for a sixth of the cost, maybe even less. As for the secrets of designer dressmaking, well we all know how much that kind of fashion costs. Imagine the savings of making those yourself - not to mention the sense of satisfaction!
Marion's books are just an example of the choices available to you. There are other ebooks that show you how to sew quilts, roman shades, patchwork, designer style clothes... the list goes on and is growing all the time. It's quite a new way to deliver great ideas and information to you but more and more top authors are produce sewing ebooks as readers realize how easily accessible and useful they are. Whether you're just starting to learn how to sew or expanding on the skills you already have it's an exciting time to be sewing!
